Barbie Is Leading The Critics Choice Awards Nominations 2024

Critics Choice Awards for Film has announced the nominations for its 29^th Edition. And it definitely is a Barbie world. Among the many stellar nominees of this year, Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie‘ hit it out of the park with 18 nominations! Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer‘ and Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Poor Things‘ both bagged 13 nominations each, while Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon‘ earned 12 nods. The ‘Barbenheimer’ duo continue to dominate the award circuit.

The largest, and perhaps most visible critics group in the country, Critics Choice, has now had its say. Voted on by a collective of broadcast, print, and digital journalists, it’s the only critics group with a live television broadcast. The Critics Choice Awards will air live on January 14, with Chelsea Handler returning to host for the second consecutive year.

Barbie Reigns

Barbie seems to have beaten Oppenheimer with the nominations at least, let’s see if the winning list matches up. The movie that brought Barbie to life, has been nominated across various categories, encompassing both acting and technical departments. Both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling earned nominations for their performances, and Greta Gerwig secured a nomination for Best Director.

With 18 nominations for the billion-dollar sensation, Barbie surpassed “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Shape of Water” which landed 14 during their respective years. Earlier this week, Barbie stormed the Golden Globes nominations with nine overall nods, followed by Oppenheimer with eight, Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven, and Past Lives with five.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt from ‘Oppenheimer’ clinched notable nominations in their respective categories. Surprisingly absent from the Critics Choice Awards nominations are both Natalie Portman (May December) and Annette Bening (Nyad) in Best Actress, Anatomy of a Fall in Best Picture, Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) in Best Supporting Actor, and shockingly Taraji P. Henson for her brilliant work in The Color Purple, despite the film earning an Ensemble nomination.
