Google Focuses On Inclusivity In BTS Video of Super Bowl Ad for Pixel 8

Tech giant Google is gearing up for the Super Bowl with its latest ad for the Pixel 8 smartphone, showcasing the device’s capabilities in aiding visually impaired individuals. Directed by blind filmmaker Adam Morse, the one-minute commercial employs a unique filming technique using petroleum jelly on the camera lens to emulate the perspective of a blind character.

A Blind Director’s Vision

In a behind-the-scenes video released on February 1, Google provided a sneak peek into the making of the ad, shedding light on Adam Morse’s directorial decisions and the creative process involved.

A Love Story Through a Visually Impaired Lens

The heart of the commercial, named “Javier In Frame,” revolves around the journey of a blind man who navigates love and family life. Through the Pixel 8’s Guided Frame technology, the ad demonstrates how the AI camera assists visually impaired individuals in capturing meaningful moments through photography.

Pixel 8’s Guided Frame Technology

Introduced in 2022, the Pixel 8 features Guided Frame technology, an AI assistant that guides camera operators in positioning and framing shots. This technology was specifically designed to empower low-vision or blind users to capture and create lasting memories.

Google’s Super Bowl Streak

This marks Google’s third consecutive year showcasing a Pixel ad during the Super Bowl. The company consistently uses this high-profile platform to highlight the strides it’s making in AI, particularly in its smartphones. The ads have become a testament to the growing integration of technology in consumer applications.

Inclusive Development

In a blog post from December 19, 2022, Google revealed its commitment to inclusivity by directly involving blind individuals in the development of its features. The company acknowledges the need for real-time feedback, emphasising a user-centric approach in crafting solutions for the visually impaired.

As technology continues to evolve, these campaigns reflect a broader industry shift towards creating products that cater to diverse user needs, ensuring that innovation is inclusive and accessible.
