Is TikTok’s New App Another Instagram Clone? Whee Aren’t Sure!

TikTok is making headlines yet again with the launch of its new app, Whee. Promising to bring a fresh twist to social media, Whee aims to attract users with multiple features and a unique user experience. Will it be successful enough to leave a mark on the digital landscape? Let’s take a look further and see what it has to offer.

What is Whee?

Whee is a new social app developed by ByteDance, also the creator of TikTok. The app is primarily designed to help users stay connected with their close friends by sharing real-life photos and moments exclusively with them. The app focuses on creating a more personal and intimate space for sharing content compared to traditional social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat.

Whee is a new social app created to keep you connected with your close friends through life’s spontaneous moments. Capture and share real-life photos that only your friends can see, allowing you to be your most authentic self. Whee is the best place for close friends to share life moments.”

Key Features

Let’s take you through some of the key features of this new app:

  • User Interface: The application features a simple UI with three primary tabs: camera, feed, and messages, as well as a notification button similar to Instagram.
  • Personal Sharing: Unlike Instagram, Whee is made for sharing photos visible only to friends, focusing on a friends-only concept.
  • Availability: The application can be downloaded on Android in over a dozen countries, excluding the US. Efforts to use a VPN to reach the app have proven unsuccessful.

Same, Same, But Different

Back in April, TikTok rolled out quite a similar app called TikTok Notes. Known as a lifestyle platform, Notes serves as a dedicated space for users to create and share photos. It also offers a unique way for individuals to showcase their day-to-day lives. This includes sharing travel tips, daily recipes, and other informative content in a visually appealing format.

The App Store describes it as a lifestyle platform that offers informative photo-text content about people’s lives, where you can see individuals sharing their travel tips, daily recipes, and more.

The decision to introduce Whee made sense because TikTok mainly dealt with video content, so creating a separate app for photos was a great move.

What Makes Whee And Notes Different?

Whee is designed for capturing and sharing life’s spontaneous moments specifically with close friends. It promotes a more private yet exclusive sharing experience. TikTok Notes, on the other hand, offers users the ability to post public notes & photos that are visible to a wider audience. Akin towards more traditional social media platform method.

Our Views

It appears that TikTok aims to duplicate this strategy with Notes in Western markets. Whee might pivot towards more private sharing and potentially enhance options for sharing product images to improve TikTok’s ad targeting insights. Although uncertain, e-commerce remains TikTok’s primary emphasis, likely connected to it in some manner.

Regardless, the launch seems odd, given that similar activities are already available on socials like Instagram and Snapchat. Nonetheless, TikTok is venturing into it, and it will be fascinating to observe how they attract users to this new visual platform.
