HBO has cancelled the provocative drama series "The Idol," starring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd, after its first season.
The show's plot centred around a young pop star (Lily-Rose Depp) influenced by a a nightclub owner and secret cult leader.
"The Idol" premiered in June this year but did not receive approval for a second season and was officially cancelled by HBO.
Additionally, the show was originally scheduled to have six episodes, but it was cancelled after five episodes.
There were a number of production problems, including the departure of the original director, Amy Seimetz.
The show was widely panned by critics, with many calling it "sexist", "problematic", and "unwatchable".
Some accused the show of glamorizing issues like sexual abuse and manipulation due to their depictions on the show.
The show premiered with 913,000 viewers, which is lower than the viewership of other HBO shows like "Euphoria" and "Succession"
HBO stated that they cancelled the show after much thought and consideration and are grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.
