World Animal Welfare Day: Pledge To Protect The Voiceless

October 4 is a very special day for our furry companions. Today is World Animal Welfare Day! This day serves as a poignant reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and care for the animals that co-exist with us on our planet. It encourages us to reflect on the well-being of animals, raise awareness about their rights, and take action towards ensuring their welfare. Fun fact: India ranked second in the Global Animal Protection Index 2020, released by “World Animal Protection,” an International animal welfare charity organization.

Animal Welfare ft. Social Media

As cute as it is to watch animal videos on the internet, it is also an amazing place to build support for a cause like animal rescue and adoption in ways that reach far beyond a “Dog For Adoption” flier on a telephone pole. So many animal shelters and rescue organizations have creatively used social media to fundraise, share adoptable pets, and create a community of energized and activated animal lovers who want to do more good.

Stretched too thin with volunteer-run establishments or short-staffed animal care teams, shelters need all hands on deck to manage the day-to-day care of their animals and need all the support they can get. Think about how you might even be able to contribute to your local animal shelter’s marketing efforts as a volunteer, how your financial contributions can help pay staff members, how you could one day adopt a pet of your own, or just how far a follow, share, or comment can go.

In honor of World Animal Welfare Day, let’s explore some exemplary animal welfare shelters that tirelessly work towards the betterment of our fur buddies.

YODA

Youth Organization in Defence of Animals (YODA) is a Mumbai-based NGO that was started with a vision to help animals throughout the country and provide homes for abandoned and stray animals. The organization actively finds homes for and undertakes mass sterilizations of stray animals (dogs and cats) in different zones across Mumbai and surrounding regions. YODA has various programs like R3 (Rescue, Rehab, Release or Rehome), R2 (Rear and Rehome), OPD program, ABC program (Animal Birth Control, especially strays), and the Behavioural Rehabilitation Program.

People For Animals (PFA)

PFA is India’s largest Non-Governmental Animal Welfare Organization with a nationwide network of 26 hospitals, 165 units, 60 mobile units, and 2.5 Lakh members. The NGO was founded by Maneka Gandhi in 1992, who is now serving the country as a political member of the BJP. PFA works to rescue and rehabilitate sick and needy animals. They also set up and run shelters, ambulance services, sterilization programs, treatment camps, and disaster rescue missions for animals. They conduct education programs in schools, fight cases in court, and lobby on animal issues in parliament. PFA aims to set up an animal welfare centre in each of the nation’s 600 districts.

World For All Animal Care

World For All Animal Care & Adoptions is a Mumbai-based not-for-profit animal welfare organization founded in 2009 that focuses on adoptions, rescues, sterilization, and awareness of stray dogs and cats. Their mission is to inspire co-existence between stray animals and the people of Mumbai, by finding loving homes for the voiceless and fostering compassion, tolerance, and humanity for those on the streets.

Animals Matter To Me

Working to create a safe and healthy world for every animal and for the people who love them, Animals Matter To Me (AMTM) is a non-profit animal welfare organization. Since 2012, AMTM aims to help every animal in need. They believe that every animal deserves the best which is why they dedicate their time to the rescue and rehabilitation of stray and abandoned animals. They wish to transform the quality of life of these voiceless furry creatures through kindness and compassion.

World Animal Protection India

This organization has moved the world to protect animals for more than 55 years. With offices in 13 countries, World Animal Protection works to give animals a better life. The organization’s activities include working with companies to ensure high standards of welfare for the animals in their care; working with governments and other stakeholders to prevent wild animals from being cruelly traded, trapped, or killed; and working for the better treatment of farmed animals.

Help Animals India

Animals who are suffering in India have strong care group allies. The nation is blessed with many dedicated animal welfare organizations. Help Animals India seeks out the best of India’s under-funded animal rights organizations to provide financial and practical assistance where it can make the most difference. They strive to not only achieve immediate assistance for India’s animals but also to nurture the culture of protecting animals in India. Help Animals India does this through education, consultation, networking, and financial support. This in turn enables these groups to fulfill their goals, grow, and most importantly, help more animals.

World Animal Welfare Day serves as a crucial reminder of the interconnectedness between humans and animals. By supporting animal welfare shelters and organizations, we contribute to creating a more compassionate world for all living beings. It is our collective duty to stand up for the rights and well-being of animals, not just on this day, but every day. Together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of our furry friends and ensure a brighter future for them.
