This shift has been monumental, so let’s delve into the advent of OTT platforms and discuss an intriguing development: the launch of India’s first government-backed OTT platform, CSpace.
OTT platforms have revolutionised the way we consume content. Unlike traditional cable services, which offer a fixed set of channels for a monthly fee, OTT platforms provide on-demand content. This means you can watch your favourite shows, movies, documentaries, and more whenever you want, without adhering to a broadcast schedule. The convenience, variety of content, and the ability to watch on multiple devices have fueled the rise of OTT platforms globally.
Statistics reveal a telling story of OTT’s dominance over cable. A report by Statista highlighted that the number of OTT service users is expected to reach US$5.81bn by 2029, with revenues soaring into the billions. In contrast, cable TV has seen a decline, with subscribers dropping as more people switch to internet-based alternatives.
The Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan officially launched CSpace in Thiruvananthapuram, marking a significant milestone in India’s digital entertainment landscape. Managed by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC), CSpace is not only a platform for showcasing diverse content but also a testament to Kerala’s commitment to promoting regional cinema. The launch event highlighted the platform’s intent to feature award-winning films, documentaries, short films, and content with high artistic and cultural merit, especially those that haven’t had a wide theatrical release but have been recognized in major international film festivals.
CSpace aims to democratise content distribution, offering a platform for filmmakers, especially those with smaller budgets, to showcase their work.In its initial phase, CSpace has admitted 42 films, including 35 feature films, six documentaries, and one short film, making it a rich repository of regional cinema right from the start. This move is anticipated to significantly impact the Malayalam film industry, offering a new avenue for filmmakers to reach a wider audience both domestically and globally.
Adding to the subscription model clarity, CSpace operates on a pay-per-view basis, making it incredibly accessible for viewers. With a nominal fee of Rs.75 to watch a film and an even lesser amount for short films, the platform ensures that high-quality content is available to a wider audience at affordable prices. This pricing strategy not only democratises access to content but also ensures that creators receive fair compensation for their work, with half of the amount paid by the public going directly to the creators.
The platform, available for download on both Android and iOS, promises to be a significant step towards enriching the regional content landscape and fostering a culture of appreciation for diverse storytelling.
CSpace is set to offer a wide range of content, catering to varied tastes and preferences. The variety of content is further reinforced by the establishment of a curator panel consisting of 60 eminent experts. This panel is tasked with evaluating submissions to ensure that only content with significant artistic merit is featured on the platform. The rigorous selection process, involving a panel of three members for each piece of content, guarantees that CSpace offers not just a wide range of films, documentaries, and short films but also ensures that these are of exceptional quality.
The platform’s focus on award-winning and internationally recognized films underscores its mission to elevate the quality of its audience and showcase the depth and diversity of Malayalam cinema.
