“Hai bade khaab badi soch
Na bad bad bas ye hai badhne ki wo khoj“
The above lines penned by Burrah in his song “Hausla” sum up his terrific journey in the world of music.
Jasdeep Singh, a.k.a. Burrah is a man with many talents. The Punjabi singer, songwriter, and producer is famous for his unique and soulful voice. Hailing from New Delhi, India, Burrah fell in love with music when he was very young. His musical journey began by competing in local singing contests, and over time, people started to notice his talent. His dedication and hard work paid off when he released his first single which got good reviews and made him even more determined to make a living in the music industry.
From a young age, Burrah showed a deep passion and love for music. He was always drawn to the melodies and rhythms, which led him to pursue a career as a singer and songwriter. He stated that “music has been my first love ever since I was a kid. It’s been an integral part of my upbringing. We, as a family, bonded over music, and I’ve grown up adoring bands like Abba.”
His father was so obsessed with music that he engineered his own stereo deck with his personal favourites. Through that, Burrah was introduced to a range of genres – international, desi, ghazal, as well as devotional. The singer comes from a very supportive and loving family. His father, in particular, has been a strong pillar of encouragement throughout his musical journey.
To show his unwavering support, Burrah’s father even had a big neon sign crafted with Burrah’s artist logo. This neon sign has become a symbol of their shared pride and belief in his talent. “My dad got it made. He really likes my logo so he just one day went and got me a neon sign,” said Burrah. There’s one in his bedroom, another in his studio, and even bumper stickers on their family car. Friends have sent the singer photos of the car when they spot it in traffic.
In 2017, Burrah was working with TVF on a track called ‘Dilli De Sardar Boys’ which was a parody track that went on to win hearts a million on the internet. The process of music making during this time, the late-night mixing, the composition, the editing, and the juggling between office and studio for a month straight up got him head over heels in love with music all over again.
“It felt like it connected me to parts of me that I myself wasn’t aware of. I felt rejuvenated and more alive than ever before. That’s when I decided that it was time for me to give in to this calling, I quit my job, took a leap of faith, and embraced music as a full-time profession!” he said.
Releasing music since 2019, songs like “No Love” and “About Time” made him the moody Punjabi pop and hip-hop voice. In addition to working with the likes of OAFF and Savera, New Delhi’s Jasdeep Singh has also been a collaborator with producers such as Gurbax, Hashbass, and Dropped Out. When he teamed with Bengaluru-bred producer Gurbax on “Sajna Slapper” in 2020, it showcased a palpable sense of the singer’s true range.
It was a testament to how versatile he is and how well he can combine his own sound with other artists’. He went on to sing on “Hausla” with rapper-producer pair Yashraj and Dropped Out in 2020 and also appeared on “Mere Warga” from Gurbax’s raucous 2022 album Rebirth. When “Sochi Jaavan” came out in 2023, it was proof that he had grown as an artist, showing a more refined and mature side to his music that helped him get more fans and attention.
Burrah had just returned from Vipassana when Ankur Tewari’s team connected with him. They wanted him to write a track and he was initially onboarded as a songwriter. But during the process, he was asked to sing it as well because their team really liked Burrah’s voice. And the rest is history. “We soon got a call from Coke Studio Bharat informing us that they were launching the season with ‘Udja’ as the hero track because the honesty, simplicity, and rawness of the song appealed to them” mentioned the singer.
Composed by OAFF & Savera, with vocals by Burrah, Jasleen Royal, and Savera Mehta, “Udja” has been written by Burrah and Kausar Munir. The song denotes a “bitter-sweet journey of two people who part ways with the promise of a better future. It says Udja is an ode to hope and the energy of new beginnings.”
Another career milestone for Burrah was his stint in season 3 of MTV Hustle. He participated as one of the contestants in the rap and hip-hop reality show that premiered on MTV India on October 21, 2023. MTV Hustle 3.0 had a panel of four squad boss judges, namely EPR, Dino James, Dee MC, and King Rocco, who provided guidance and critique to the contestants throughout the season. Additionally, famous rapper Badshah was also associated with the show. The new season was hosted by the energetic and engaging Super Manikk and Wicked Sunny.
It is evident that his dedication to music and his natural talent have played a significant role in his success. He has honed his skills through years of practice and dedicated himself to becoming a versatile and skilled singer.
