Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – Prequel Review and How to Watch All Mad Max Films

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has generated immense excitement among fans and critics alike. Premiering at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, there has been widespread anticipation for the film. The film, a prequel to the critically acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road, promises to expand on the universe established by George Miller, who has directed all five movies in the Mad Max saga. With nearly a decade of development, the film’s release has been highly anticipated, to delve deeper into the backstory of one of the franchise’s most iconic characters.

Reviewing Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga builds on the dystopian world introduced in the previous films, bringing new intensity and depth to the narrative. Directed by George Miller and co-written with Nico Lathouris, the film is 148 minutes long, offering a detailed look at Furiosa’s origins.

Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the titular role, stepping into the shoes of the character originally portrayed by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Taylor-Joy delivers a powerful performance, capturing the character’s transformation from a traumatised child to a fierce warrior.

Chris Hemsworth stars as the formidable warlord Dementus, bringing a mix of menace and charisma to the role. The film’s action sequences are breathtaking, maintaining the franchise’s trademark blend of intensity and visual spectacle. However, some plot developments feel constructed, serving primarily to move Furiosa through various stages of her journey. Despite this, the film successfully deepens the tale of the Mad Max universe, making it a compelling addition to the series.

The Mad Max Legacy: A Brief Overview

The Mad Max franchise began with Mad Max in 1979, starring Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky. This was followed by Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985, with Gibson reprising his role. The series was revitalised with Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, which featured Tom Hardy as Max and introduced Charlize Theron’s Furiosa. Fury Road received critical acclaim and won six Academy Awards out of ten nominations.

Set 15 years before the events of Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga explores the early life of Furiosa, who is abducted by the warlord Dementus and his biker gang. Forced to grow up quickly in a harsh, post-apocalyptic world, Furiosa dreams of returning home to her family. With the help of Immortan Joe’s enforcer, Praetorian Jack, she hones her survival skills and becomes the warrior seen in Fury Road.

Where to Watch the Mad Max Films

For those looking to catch up on the Mad Max saga, all four previous films are available to stream on Max. The release order is as follows:

Mad Max (1979)

In a post-apocalyptic Australia, police officer Max Rockatansky seeks vengeance against a violent motorcycle gang that murders his family and best friend, transforming him into Mad Max.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)

Max becomes a reluctant hero, helping a small community defend their precious fuel supply from a marauding band of wasteland warriors led by the ruthless Humungus.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)

In the third instalment, Max is exiled to the desert after being betrayed in Bartertown, a brutal trading post run by Aunty Entity (Tina Turner), and must protect a tribe of lost children.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

In a high-octane chase across the wasteland, Max joins forces with Imperator Furiosa to escape the tyrannical Immortan Joe and liberate his captive wives, resulting in a relentless battle for freedom.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga delivers on its promise of thrilling action and deepened lore, offering fans a deeper look into one of the franchise’s most beloved characters. With standout performances, especially by Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, and George Miller’s masterful direction, the film is a worthy prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. While it may not capture all the surprise and emotional depth of its predecessor, it stands as a powerful and visually stunning addition to the Mad Max universe.
