Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ is officially returning for a season 2. This renewal was confirmed by Netflix India on June 2nd, in response to the series’ immense popularity and enthusiastic audience reception.
Netflix India celebrated the announcement with a vibrant event at Mumbai’s Carter Road. A flash mob of 100 dancers, choreographed by Kruti Mahesh, performed a medley of songs from the series. This lively performance was featured in an announcement video, which was shared widely, generating significant buzz and excitement among fans.
Heeramandi, which premiered on May 1, quickly garnered widespread acclaim. The series boasts a star-studded cast, including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal, and Taha Shah Badussha. Even though it received mixed response but the audiences could not dodge the extravagance and the cultural phenomenon that it became, becoming the most viewed Indian series globally within its first week. It topped Netflix’s Non-English Top 10 list in 43 countries, reflecting its broad appeal.
The first season of Heeramandi delved into the power struggles between the women of Heeramandi, the Nawabs, and British colonial rulers. The show’s rich narrative and compelling characters drew viewers into the world of Tawaifs, highlighting their struggles and resilience.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has teased that the second season will explore the aftermath of the Partition of India. The narrative will follow the women of Heeramandi as they leave Lahore and integrate into the burgeoning film industries of Mumbai or Kolkata.
