India has been relentlessly making its presence felt on the global stage and the Grammys were no different. In a spectacular night at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, California, Indian musicians made a mark with their outstanding contributions. Bagging awards under various important categories, Indians were truly the shining stars of the night.
The fusion band ‘Shakti,’ led by Shankar Mahadevan and legendary tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, clinched the prestigious Grammy Award for ‘Best Global Music Album‘ for their latest masterpiece, ‘This Moment.’ The album, released on June 30 last year, features a collaborative effort from renowned artists such as John McLaughlin, V Selvaganesh, and Ganesh Rajagopalan.
Zakir Hussain, not content with just one win, secured another Grammy for ‘Best Global Music Performance‘ for his contribution to “Pashto” alongside Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, featuring Rakesh Chaurasia on the flute. Chaurasia, a virtuoso flute player, celebrated his own achievement with two Grammy victories, further highlighting the depth of Indian talent on the global stage.
A moment of pride unfolded as Shankar Mahadevan and Ganesh Rajagopalan accepted the Grammy on behalf of ‘Shakti’ during the star-studded ceremony. The joyous occasion was captured and shared by the Grammys on their official platform, acknowledging the brilliance of ‘This Moment’ with a heartfelt caption: “Congrats Best Global Music Album winner – ‘This Moment’ Shakti. #GRAMMYs.“
Renowned Indian musical composer Ricky Kej took to social media to celebrate the historic wins. Kej highlighted the significance of Ustad Zakir Hussain’s achievement, making history by winning three Grammys in one night. He also acknowledged Rakesh Chaurasia’s double victory, emphasising the collective success of Indian artists at the Grammys and the loud celebration of India’s music and musicians across the globe.
