The month of June marks the onset of promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people as a social group. Popularly the entire month of June is known as the Pride Month. This is the month where the world’s LGBT communities come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves.
Several revolutionary political decisions have been made to honour the spirit of the pride. For eg. Barack Obama during his Presidential tenure legalised same sex marriage and the Supreme Court of India too slashed Section 377 making room for the LGBTQ recognition in the country. The craze of pride is observable on social media too. This is the time when hashtags(#) like #pride #LGBTQ #pridemonth start picking up pace. In recognition of this month Facebook and Instagram have shown their support and interest too!
In a tweet by popular app developer Alessandro Paluzzi. He mentions: “#Instagram has enabled the rainbow hashtags 🌈🏳️🌈 for the #PrideMonth 🥳“
Some of the hashtags are: #transequalitynow; #queers; #queerlife; #pride🌈; #lgbt; #lgbtcommunity. The full list of hashtags can be found by clicking ‘Here‘
