A year after the record-breaking, historically long Hollywood SAG-AFTRA strike, industry A-listers reunited to honour each other for their remarkable work. The 30th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards 2024 took place in Los Angeles on Saturday, celebrating the best acting performances of the year in TV and film. Oppenheimer was the big winner of the night, cementing its status as the frontrunner at the Oscars as well.
On its 30th anniversary, the 2024 SAG Awards saw Christopher Nolan’s film make waves in the ‘Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture’ category. Cillian Murphy clinched the night’s honour for Oppenheimer. Barbra Streisand was honoured with the SAG Life Achievement Award, presented to her by actors Jennifer Aniston and Bradley Cooper.
This was no ordinary SAG Awards year, for the telecast aired live on Netflix for the first time ever – including a pre-show hosted by Tan France and Elaine Welteroth. Netflix is one of the only streamers that doesn’t dabble in live TV, so teaming up with the SAG Awards was unexpected but a pleasant surprise. The streaming platform thus proved that it does traditional TV while also being a home for other awards shows looking to reach new audiences worldwide.
Streaming the awards on Netflix also meant no commercial breaks. Instead, Tan France would return in between awards to interview previous winners backstage, starting with Jeremy Allen White after his win for “The Bear.” This proved to be an inventive alternative to traditional commercial breaks. Including post-win interviews was also a good idea as such clips tend to perform on social media.
In a teary-eyed moment for ardent fans, the SAG Awards 2024 took a leaf from the 50th Emmys in January by uniting iconic casts of the most loved shows and movies on Saturday night. The heartfelt bond shared by the Modern Family cast, the dynamic chemistry of the Breaking Bad duo, and the much-anticipated reunion of The Devil Wears Prada trio after years sparked a wave of nostalgia on social media.
The Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Dean Norris, and R.J. Mitte, were all present at the ceremony. They gathered together on stage to present the trophy for Best Drama Series Ensemble to the cast of Succession. Breaking Bad had previously won the same award in the category 10 years earlier. Talk about iconic! The cast left the audience in splits with their entertaining banter.
At the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 24th, the beloved cast of Modern Family — Sofía Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill, Eric Stonestreet, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson — came together once again to reveal the winner of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Even though an ABC program revival is unlikely, we can still relive the cast’s memorable moments together.
The iconic trio from The Devil Wears Prada — Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Meryl Streep — graced the stage together, bringing back nostalgic memories for the audience. Not only did they present the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, but they also added humour to the moment with a playful skit, making the reunion even more memorable.
Elijah Wood and Sean Astin reunited on stage and had a lighthearted conversation about why Wood never got his SAG Award trophy after The Lord of the Rings won years ago. Astin made fun of Wood for not being present to pick it up, saying that he either sold it on eBay or burned it.
