With the finest films and series, captivating documentaries, entertaining reality shows and more, every night was a Netflix night in 2022.” wrote Netflix on its blog.
It has been an interesting year on OTT and the releases on Netflix are something that surprised, disappointed, made an impression and gave emotional roller coasters to people. Here’s looking back at all Indian drama and international one that was released on this OTT platform.
From the ensemble cast of Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, a heartland thriller, to the return of fan favourites like Delhi Crime S2 and Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives S2, Alia Bhatt’s ground-breaking performance in Darlings, Dhanush winning international acclaim and representing India in the Russo brothers’ action thriller The Gray Man, and falling in love with iconic soundtracks from shows like Mismatched S2 (Aise Kyun), Monica, O My Darling ( (Running Up That Hill and Master of Puppets).
In 2022, Netflix released 27 Netflix movies and TV shows in India, spanning 10+ genres and 5 formats. Six out of seven returning seasons of a Netflix series were the top TV show in India, while seven out of the nine non-English films released this year were included in the global Top 10 for non-English films. Darlings had the best opening for a Netflix movie in India and was watched in 28 countries with over 32 million total viewing hours, while Monica, O My Darling, trended at the top of the charts in 7 countries, including India, for the first two weeks after its debut. The most popular songs were Mismatched S2, Jamtara Sabka Number Ayega S2, and Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein.
RRR (Hindi) (over 73 million hours of viewings), Gangubai Kathiawadi (over 50 million hours of viewings), and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (over 21 million hours of viewings) were three of the biggest blockbusters from Netflix India that drew people from all over the world. RRR (Hindi) was the longest-trending Indian film ever on the global Top 10 for non-English films, trending for 15 weeks.
Viewers fell in love with a dizzying array of movies and television shows across every genre and format; thrillers were the most popular genre for Indian stories in 2022, followed by action dramas and sports dramas. In India, action dramas and thrillers were the most popular genres for watching international stories. Additionally, 2022 was the year of a variety of forms, including stand-up comedy, true-crime documentaries, and India’s first interactive adventure programme, Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls.
The second seasons of Inventing Anna, Bridgerton, Wednesday, Stranger Things, and DAHMER: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story comprised in top five English-language series of all time. Along with these, the most popular international games in India were Money Heist (Spanish), Squid Game (Korean), and All Of Us Are Dead (Korean). After English, the most popular non-Indian languages on Netflix were Korean and Spanish.
