Marques Brownlee, famously known as MKBHD, is a prominent American YouTuber & internet personality famous for his high-quality technology reviews & consumer electronics content. From his humble beginnings, Marques quickly grew into one of the most influential voices in tech, amassing 19.4 million subscribers on YouTube & 4.95 million followers on Instagram.
His channel is marked by crisp production values & a keen understanding of technology, setting the gold standard for tech content, especially on YouTube.
But Marques is more than just a tech reviewer. His accomplishments extend well beyond the digital realm. He’s been featured in various media outlets, collaborated with top tech companies like Samsung, Apple & more, and even made an appearance on a talk show with Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri.
His merch line, MKBHD, includes stylish apparel, wristbands, and dog leashes among others, reflecting his personal brand & has become a hit among his loyal followers.
Beyond YouTube, Marques is active on platforms like Instagram & Threads, where he shares updates on his life, including his involvement in sports, particularly ultimate frisbee.
Began playing ultimate frisbee during his time at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. He joined the school’s frisbee team after attending a Frisbee camp, marking the start of his journey in the sport. According to Brownlee, he has been playing for around 17 years, indicating that he likely started around 2006.
However, 2-3 years later he began his YouTube journey by posting his first video in January 2009, about new products or reviews of the products she owned & gained considerable recognition.
After his high school career, Brownlee went on to play at Stevens Institute of Technology & later joined the New Jersey Hammerheads in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) in 2013, which marked the beginning of his professional frisbee career.
Recently, a video of his impressive play went viral. During the 2022 World Ultimate Club Championships with New York PoNY, he threw a pass from midfield that was described as “a million feet in the air.” The disc hung in the air for nearly 10 seconds before descending into the end zone.
At that moment, three players—two from Japan’s Buzz Bullets & Brownlee from PoNY—jumped simultaneously, and Brownlee came down with the disc. Using his impressive 6-foot-7-inch wingspan to jump over his opponents, this incredible athletic feat ranked No. 2 on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” top plays that night.
Brownlee has such a strong influence that his opinions can significantly affect a product’s success. If he shares positive feedback, it can lead to increased sales. Conversely, a negative review from him can lead to a business’s downfall.
For instance, when Brownlee referred to the electric vehicle Fisker Ocean as “the worst car I’ve ever tested” in a video that received 6 million views, the company ended up filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Although he stated on social media that his review wasn’t the sole reason for their failure—claiming they were already struggling before his videos & it was evident that his comments had a major impact.
Brownlee described making the mixed U.S. team at the World Championships as a lifelong goal. He had tried out several times in the past but was never selected for this event, which occurs once every four years.
“I am a little bit surprised but very motivated. As someone who has wanted to play on a Team USA for my entire career and never actually made it, it was like ‘now I really want to win.’ This is a new goal that I haven’t had before that I want to attack with everything I have,” Brownlee said.
While he mentioned he can play various positions based on the team’s needs, he will be positioned on the defensive line in Australia. Team USA head coach John Groess stated that Brownlee’s primary role will be to guard opposing players in a technique called a “mark.”
Groess noted, “He’s probably one of the best in the world at that particular skill.”
Will Brownlee stop creating content in the frisbee world? It looks like he won’t! “If I’m getting worse or I’m not having fun, I probably won’t be playing. Every year it’s been fun, and every year I’ve been improving, so I feel pretty good about that,” Brownlee said.
