Must Watch Documentaries for Social Media Buffs!

Today is a day that we celebrate each day. Yes, it is Social Media Day. Social Media Day has been taking place since the 30th of June in 2010. It was created by Mashable as a way of recognizing the impact that social media has had on communications around the world, as well as bringing people together to celebrate.

Social media has become a major factor in the world. For many of us, it is how we keep up with what our friends are up to, even if they’re on the other side of the planet. It has also played a big part in world events.

On this day, we are sharing some must-watch documentaries with you that you must check out if you are a social media buff!

The American Meme

The American Meme is a 2018 American documentary film that explores the lifestyle and trajectory of four social media influencers. The film was directed, produced, and written by Bert Marcus, and follows Paris HiltonEmily RatajkowskiDJ Khaled, and Josh Ostrovsky as they work to create commercial brands out of their online presence. The documentary film raises the idea of modern alienation under capitalism and explores various diverse materials.

The Great Hack

The Great Hack is a 2019 documentary film about the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal, produced and directed by Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer, both previous documentary Academy Award nominees. The film’s music was composed by Emmy-nominated film composer Gil Talmi. The documentary focuses on Professor David Carroll of Parsons and The New School, Brittany Kaiser (former business development director for Cambridge Analytica), and British investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr. Their stories interweave to expose the work of Cambridge Analytica in the politics of various countries, including the United Kingdom’s Brexit campaign and the 2016 United States elections

The Social Dilemma

The Social Dilemma is a 2020 docudrama directed by Jeff Orlowski. It is about the rise of social media and the damage it has caused to society, focusing on its exploitation of its users for financial gain through surveillance capitalism and data mining, how its design is meant to nurture an addiction, its use in politics, its impact on mental health, and its role in spreading conspiracy theories and aiding groups such as flat-earthers and white supremacists.

Fake Famous

Fake Famous is a 2021 American documentary film directed by Nick Bilton. It is a social experiment involving three non-famous people who attempt to become social media influencers by “faking” fame. They use tactics such as buying followers and faking a luxurious lifestyle. The documentary follows their progress and discusses issues related to social media.
