Prajakta Koli Victory from Being an Emmy Awards Nominee to Winner for Michelle Obama’s #CreatorsForChange

Our Indian digital creator, Prajakta Koli announced her win at the 48th Annual Daytime Emmy awards for Michelle Obama’s YouTube Originals ‘Creators for Change On Girls’ Education’ on June 25, 2021. This documentary won in the category of Outstanding Daytime Non-Fiction Special. Aside from Prajakta and Michelle, YouTube creators Liza Koshy and Thembe Mahlaba were also a part of the team. 

Daytime Emmys made the official announcement on Twitter on June 26, 2021. Before that, it was streamed on Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) and Paramount + on June 25, 2021.

Now, let’s get a bit deeper into the identities of the creators. Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama a.k.a Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States of America was the first African-American woman who served this position being married to Barack Obama, the former 44th President of the United States of America. Apart from that, she’s also an attorney and author.

Prajakta Koli is a YouTube content creator, blogger, and actor. ‘Khayali Pulao’ and Netflix’s ‘Mismatched’ are the films she has acted in, and ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’ is her upcoming one. She’s known on social media as MostlySane. Before becoming a YouTube creator, American actor, television host, and comedian, Elizabeth Shaila Koshy or Liza Koshy was a Vine creator. Thembe Mahlaba creates content on the YouTube channel ‘Pap Culture’, which is a “South African entertainment hub that aims to be authentic to the story-telling of African youth culture.”

It was released on March 8, 2020. Currently, its views are over 2 million and there are 4.5K likes! The official video by YouTube Originals of ‘Creators for Change’ is titled “Why 98 Million Adolescent Girls Aren’t In School.” Premiered on March 17, 2020, it has received over 11 million views and 33K likes. In the video, the featured creators interviewed girls in different countries like India, Vietnam, and Namibia about their educational opportunities and discussed the topic with the former First Lady. Prajakta and Liza visited programs in India and Vietnam respectively which are associated with Obama’s foundation program, Girls Opportunity Alliance. Koshy went to Room To Read in Vietnam, Koli visited Study Hall Educational Foundation (SHEF) in Lucknow, India, and Mahlaba went to Physically Active Youth (PAY) in Katutura, Namibia.

This wasn’t the first time Prajakt Koli represented India as the United Nations ambassador. In May 2018, she participated in YouTube’s ‘Creators for Change’ program, for which she attempted rapping and created ‘No Offence’, a music video produced by One Digital Entertainment. It was screened in the United Nations headquarters, New York as part of their International Day of Tolerance. The theme being hate speech, her video focused on internet trolling, sexism, and homophobia.

Apart from winning Emmys, MostlySane’s first short film ‘Khayali Pulao’ was also showcased at one of the prestigious and oldest Indian festivals in North America, the New York Indian Film Festival, which was held from June 4 to June 13, 2021. She’s doing wonders with her content and deserves to be the multi-winner that she is. Being an Indian ambassador of the United Nations is a matter of great pride for India.
