On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, we had the pleasure of engaging in an insightful conversation with Ujjwal. He revealed the secret ingredients that keep him relevant in both the educational industry & the social media world. Let’s dive right in ⬇️
What sparked your passion for creating educational content in finance, and how did you turn that into a career?
I always believed I was a good public speaker, finding joy in helping others understand complex ideas. During lockdown, I grew fond of speaking to a camera. I launched a finance Instagram page as a 30-day experiment, posting one reel daily. By day 20, I gained around 200K followers! I drew inspiration from established creators, focusing on content creation over numbers. This journey has continued for over 2 years, and I’m thankful for the experience.
How do you decide on the topics you cover, given the wide range of subjects you address?
Content creation is all about how much your posts are shared and saved on Instagram. To really make an impact, focus on creating content that people can’t help but engage with. This includes stuff that makes people laugh, raises awareness, simplifies life, or shares something valuable they didn’t know before. Hot topics like breaking news, railways, air travel, and useful government schemes also get a lot of traction. If you can get your audience to share your content like crazy, you’ve nailed it. That’s where the real win lies for any creator.
How do you stay updated on the latest trends and developments in the fields you teach?
I make it a point to observe what others in my space are doing & how they’re doing it, as well as the type of content that platforms are currently promoting. Since platform trends can shift over time, what’s effective today might not be in a few months. I also view content from the perspective of a regular viewer – if something grabs my attention or makes me want to share it, I take note. I try to incorporate those engaging elements into my own work because, ultimately, it’s the small details that make a big difference.
In your opinion, how has social media transformed the way education is delivered to the masses?
The process has become simpler, and educators are now more accessible. A decade ago, I relied on my dad’s CA for my investments and taxes due to my limited knowledge and the complexity of the subject. Now, many experts create understandable content and are just a DM or email away for a conversation.
What challenges do you face in simplifying complex concepts for a diverse online audience?
Time constraint is a big challenge. It’s quite a task to simplify an entire concept in less than a minute sometimes, which is why a lot of effort goes into scripting a reel, and speaking the right words at the right time to convey the message better. Otherwise, sometimes the platform tends to push a specific type of content only, which may temporarily cut your reach. So trying to figure out what to do during such times is a challenge.
Can you share a memorable moment or breakthrough in your career?
First was when I received a YouTube silver play button, my first TEDx talk back in 2020, and my first JOSH Talk back in 2021. I was glad that my family was happy seeing me achieve these feats, and I’m grateful to the Lord for everything.
What’s the most innovative online educational method you’ve seen, and how do you use it in your content?
To communicate a general topic effectively, it’s best to share personal experiences. For example, while studying for the CA exams is a common subject, my study methods provide a unique perspective that only I can express. Moreover, if you’re discussing a topic that is not well-known, storytelling is often the most effective way to share your message. Turning your idea into a scenario or story can help communicate it.
What are your future aspirations for educational content creation?
I really want to venture into podcasting. The idea isn’t to record too many podcasts but rather focus on fewer guests with relevant and deep insights on key topics so that I can manage it along with my other channels.
