WhatsApp Update: Migration of Chat History from Android to iOS

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that users will now be able to migrate WhatsApp Chat History switch between Android and iPhone without losing encryption on their messages. A feature that was highly requested, helps in providing more flexibility and security for the many WhatsApp users looking to switch to a new device.

Earlier transferring your WhatsApp information meant losing your chat history, as there was no way to maintain security during the transition. Because WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted and stored on devices, Meta says that it had to work collaboratively with OS developers to come up with a solution that facilitated data sharing in this way.

The feature will be much appreciated by Indian users given how popular WhatsApp is in the country with over 450 million users. The biggest concern for Android users when switching to iOS is often around saving WhatsApp data. On Android, WhatsApp data is backed up to Google Drive, while on iOS it is backed up to the iCloud, and there’s no compatibility between the two.

The ability to transport the data will be included in Apple’s Move to iOS app, which is available on the Google Play Store. The option will be available when a user is setting up a new iPhone using the app. Android users will need to be on a minimum of Android 5.0 and above. Apple iOS users will need to be on iOS 15.5 and above.

Step by Step Whatsapp chats transfer from Android to iOS

Step 1 :

Open the Move to iOS App on your Android phone and follow the on-screen instructions. A code will be displayed on your iPhone and when prompted, enter the code on your Android smartphone.

Step 2 :

Now tap on continue and follow the instructions given on the screen. After that select “WhatsApp” on the “Transfer Data” section.

Step 3 :

Tap on “Start” on your android smartphone, and wait for the WhatsApp app to prepare the data for export. Later you’d be asked to sign out from your Android smartphone after the data is being prepared.

Step 4 :

Now tap on “Next” to return to the “Move to iOS” App. Tap on continue to transfer the data from Android to iOS and confirm the transfer.

Step 5 :

Now, Install Whatsapp and log in from the same number used on your old Andriod device.

Step 6 :

Tap on “Start” and wait for the process to complete. The process will finish activating your new device. Once done, you can see WhatsApp chats being restored from your Android smartphone in a similar way it was required.

The updated process is being rolled out to all WhatsApp users from today. And now, switching between Android and iPhone will give users more choice in their device selection and management.
