Who says art can’t be fun and inclusive? In a world where self-expression and acceptance are celebrated, there are brands that are breaking traditional barriers and infusing creativity into products that represent inclusivity. From vibrant designs to unconventional prints, these brands are turning everyday items into arty masterpieces that speak to diverse audiences. We got in touch with innovative queer founders of two such beautiful brands – Nukkad Studios (owned by Akash Chaudhari) and Olakatu (owned by Preston Olakatu) as a part of our #ProudlyMe series. Join us as we explore the magical realm of these brands that combine inclusivity and artistry, injecting a delightful dose of fun into our lives.
Nukkad Studios is a Mumbai-based Instagram store that is an absolute fun-fest for art lovers. It all started when Akash started off by customising and printing posters and T-shirts. Today, they offer everything from fun socks to extraordinary totes and unique tees. Here’s a little bit more about the founder and his favourite product.
A: “I wanted people to engage with prints and arts that speak to them. The dream was to make really good quality T-shirts and provide such prints that can never be a Poccha! (a mop)
A: “In this dynamic world of constantly changing trends, products of Nukkad Studios, and all our designs, are unapologetically our aesthetic, irrespective of where the trend goes. No matter what the definition of “cool” is, we will make stuff that resonates with the aesthetic of India and our beautiful art.”
A: “My current favourite would be the Starry Nights socks we made. They are a pair of cotton socks with every line finely knitted on the fabric. It is a tribute to my favourite artist – Van Gogh.”
Preston is an illustrator and writer who loves to spread his wings of creativity and bring his art to life through comics, zines and stickers. He enjoys working for his brand as his products are all a reflection of his life experiences. Check out what he said about his work and his favourite product.
A: “My personal brand, ‘Olakatu’ is where I have the opportunity to express myself through illustrations and the written word. Through comics, zines and stickers I like to tell stories of what it’s like being a queer person in India. I also run ‘Metafair’, an event curation initiative, that for the most part focuses on providing queer artists and businesses with the opportunity to promote and sell their work at LIVE events. Our clients have included Social Bangalore, WeWork India and Tiger Tiger Brewhouse.”
A: “Most of my products are a by-product of life experiences and being queer has influenced the specific way I view the world, immensely. Whether it be the poetry I write or the comics I make, they are all influenced by how I’ve navigated the world as a queer person. I can honestly say that there is nothing more #ProudlyMe than the work I create.”
A: “My current favourites are the stickers of Pokemon holding queer flags that I made and I love them all!”
Through their arty offerings, these brands remind us that self-expression knows no bounds. They encourage us to celebrate our individuality, embrace diversity, and spread positivity through the things we wear, use, and surround ourselves with. Remember, art has the power to unite, inspire, and transform.
