Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta to be the company’s new name at the annual Connect conference on October 28, 2021. Meta will be bringing all the apps and technologies under a single brand, bringing a new era of social connection. Its focus will be on metaverse, which incorporates 3D, connecting people, finding communities, and growing businesses.
If you have seen the American science fiction adventure film ‘Ready Player One’ released in 2018, created based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name you will understand the concept better.
Renaming the company doesn’t indicate any changes in the apps’ names. Except for the company name changing to Meta, the name of apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp will remain the same.
Facebook Newsroom clarifies, “The metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world. It’s the next evolution in a long line of social technologies, and it’s ushering in a new chapter for our company.”

From building technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), smart glasses, and so on, there’s a lot more in store that is coming up. Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences to help build the next evolution in social technology.
Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram throws light on the Metaverse and Instagram’s future:
Here’s Zuckerberg’s statement on creating opportunity in the Metaverse, “The last few years have been humbling for me and our company in a lot of ways. One of the main lessons that I’ve learned is that building products aren’t enough. We also need to help build ecosystems so that millions of people can have a stake in the future, can be rewarded for their work, and benefit as the tide rises, not just as consumers but as creators and developers. But this period has also been humbling because as big of a company as we are, we’ve also learned what it’s like to build for other platforms. And living under their rules has profoundly shaped my views on the tech industry. Most of all, I’ve come to believe that the lack of choice and high fees are stifling innovation, stopping people from building new things, and holding back the entire internet economy.”
Vishal Shah, VP of Metaverse, concludes, “Today, much of what you buy on the Internet is inside a single app, website, or game. You might buy a custom skin for your gaming avatar, but you can’t take it with you when you move to a new space. In the physical world, that would be the equivalent of buying your favorite sports team’s jersey and never being able to wear it outside of the stadium. In the future, you will be able to buy digital clothes for your avatar and then wear them into the metaverse more broadly.”
He further adds, “There will be many different kinds of creators in the metaverse: creators who make digital objects, creators who offer services and experiences, and those who build entire worlds like game creators do today.”
