The wait is finally over! The trailer of one of the most anticipated films of the year, Nag Aswhin‘s “Kalki 2898 AD” is finally out! Featuring a stellar cast like Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Disha Patani, and Kamal Haasan, Kalki is India’s first mytho sci-fi movie. Ever since the trailer dropped on Monday evening, the viewers have been raving about the movie.

Fans can’t get enough of the epic visuals, characters, menacing villains and cool action sequences set to unfold on the big screen. While the hype for Kalki 2898 AD was quite high, the trailer got a mixed response. However, its dystopian worldbuilding, action sequences and insane VFX got a major thumbs up. The movie is finally set to release in theatres on June 27 after being postponed from May 9.

Fans also loved how mum-to-be Deepika Padukone will be playing the role of a mother on the screen for the third time in Kalki after Jawan and Brahmastra. It’s her debut in Telugu cinema and also stars Disha Patani in a dynamic action role.

The Plot

Set in a dystopian world, “Kalki 2898 AD” showcases how survival in the city of Kashi is a challenge. The story follows citizens and scientists who await a saviour. Ashwathama (Amitabh Bachchan) from the Mahabharata re-emerges after decades in hiding. He pledges to protect Deepika Padukone‘s unborn child, who is thought to be Kalki. The movie is a sci-fi-infused retelling of the Hindu myth of Kalki and the Kali Yuga, the end of the current world age.

The Larger-Than-Life-Film

At a reported budget topping Rs. 600 crore ($72M), Kalki 2898 AD is estimated to be one of the most expensive Indian movies ever made. Aswani Dutt’s Vyjayanthi Movies is behind the production, with Swapna Dutt and Priyanka Dutt producing. It became the first Indian film to launch its first teaser at the San Diego Comic-Con last year under the working title Project K. “The whole film is made for international [audiences]. That’s why it’s the highest budget and we’ve got the best actors in the country,” says Prabhas.

Kalki: Desi Thor

As cinephiles checked out the trailer, they drew parallels between Kalki 2898 AD and Hollywood films like ‘Dune’, ‘Mad Max’, ‘Children Of Men‘ and ‘Star Wars‘. But the closest comparison comes between Kalki and the “Thor” movies. A fan-made video showing scene-by-scene comparisons of Prabhas’ upcoming film to those in Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Thor’ franchise has taken the internet by storm.

In the video, scenes from ‘Kalki‘ are merged with iconic moments of the God of Thunder in films like ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder‘. While pointing out the parallels between the films, fans have been praising both Prabhas and Hemsworth for their powerful performances and the impressive visual effects in their respective films.

Netizens are calling Kalki Desi Thor’. Reacting to the trailer, one fan stated, “Mujhe lag raha hai Prabhas KALKI sab record tod dega. Thor × #Prabhas on fire.” Impressed with the visuals, one fan dubbed Prabhas as “Indian Super Hero.” Another wrote, “Thor x Bhairava.“If it was not Hemsworth as Thor, Prabhas has every quality that role needs.
