#NavNaari: Celebrating the nine forms of Goddess Durga by highlighting stories of women who reflect a quality of each Devi.
The auspicious festival of Navratri is upon us. For these nine days, devotees have been honouring Goddess Durga and her nine forms, celebrating her victorious battles against evil. Each of the nine days is devoted to a specific form of Durga. Today, October 5, marks the third day of Navratri. Today, devotees worship Chandraghanta devi. She is the embodiment of beauty and a symbol of bravery. One such creator who comes to our mind as someone who depicts these qualities is Malini Agarwal.
Famously known as MissMalini, she is the woman who turned the world of Indian media upside down with her vibrant personality & groundbreaking content. You might know her as the founder of MissMalini.com, a blog that has become synonymous with Bollywood news, fashion trends, and lifestyle hacks. Let’s go back to where it all began and uncover how this remarkable woman went from being an RJ (radio jockey) to the ultimate Bollywood BFF.
Being a girl from a small city like Pragyaraj (then Allahabad) in UP, her father was a diplomat. Traveling to Somalia, then Lebanon, followed by Greece and Germany, and later Bulgaria and the Ivory Coast, shaped her early life. She lived a very fancy lifestyle before it was earned independently. “The world travel and education in American schools are truly credited for shaping the person I am today,” she said to Money Control.
As she was travelling around the world, her studies were being compromised on a level. So during 11th grade, Malini & her mother relocated to India. To continue her education, she went to Maiteryi College, Delhi. She was hesitant to go to an all-girls college, as it could be very intimidating due to her accent and other students making assumptions about her.
“In college, I studied English literature. So I got into dancing & theatre. And then I got picked to be a professional dancer. I was a backup dancer for six years. And it was really fun. I loved that life. I got to travel again all across the world, but this time on my own merits. As a backup dancer, I got maybe Rs 2,000 a show, which was a lot back in 1998,” she added.
Malini’s journey into the world of media kicked off in 2003. All new to the city of dreams, Mumbai, she interviewed at places and got her first break in Asia Content. She used to write the romance and sexuality section on the MTV website. Later, at Radio One in Mumbai, she auditioned for the role of a radio jockey, and fortunately got in!
Imagine this: a young Malini, passionate about romance, music, & communication, steps into the world of radio, where she would spend nine years sharing her voice and stories with listeners. It’s true! She discovered her love for storytelling and began to share her insights on lifestyle and Bollywood through her radio shows.
Having a knack for writing, in 2008, Malini took a leap of faith and started her blog, MissMalini.com. This wasn’t just any blog; it was a digital diary filled with her thoughts on Bollywood, fashion, beauty, and lifestyle, a space where her readers could connect with the latest trends in a fun & engaging way. In an era when blogging was still finding its footing in India, Malini emerged as a pioneer, establishing herself as a trusted voice in the industry.
The blogs quickly gained traction, capturing the attention of Bollywood celebrities & fashionistas alike. From sharing behind-the-scenes moments of film sets to covering exclusive interviews with the stars, MissMalini.com became the go-to platform for anyone wanting a glimpse into the glamorous world of Bollywood.
Malini didn’t stop at blogging; she expanded her horizons by guest anchoring several television shows. She lent her charisma to programs like Tech Toyz on CNN-IBN and Style Police on UTV Bindass. But her crowning glory was her own show, MissMalini’s World on TLC, and now Thread Talks India, where she showcases her unique perspective on the life of celebrities & influencers.
Her transition from blogging to television was seamless, as she brought her signature style & wit to the screen, instantly connecting with audiences. Malini’s ability to connect with viewers made her not just a host, but also a dost they could trust for the latest scoop in entertainment.
In a major career move, Malini co-founded Good Creator Co. in 2015. This is an influencer marketing firm that aims to empower content creators across India, providing them with the tools & resources they need to succeed in the digital realm. Malini’s experience as an influencer positions her perfectly to guide & nurture emerging talent.
At Good Creator Co., she’s not just building a brand, but also lighting the path for a new wave of creators, making sure content creation keeps flourishing in India. Her passion for nurturing talent really shines through, showcasing her deep belief in the magic of storytelling & creativity.
In 2018, Malini added another feather to her cap by publishing her debut book, To the Moon: How I Blogged My Way to Bollywood. This book is more than just a memoir; it’s an inspiring story of resilience, creativity, and the journey of a woman who broke barriers to pave her way in the competitive world of media.
Moreover, in 2024, she released the second part of her book, Under the Influence, which explores deeper into her experiences as an influencer & the lessons she’s learned along the way. Through her writing, Malini encourages aspiring creators to embrace their unique voices and take risks in their careers.
Malini Agarwal is often hailed as the first-ever influencer in India, having started her journey in content creation long before it became a renowned career choice today. Her ability to anticipate the potential of digital platforms & engage with audiences has distinguished her in a competitive field.
In a world where trends come and go, Malini Agarwal remains a constant source of inspiration & joy. Whether she’s sharing her thoughts on the latest Bollywood release or guiding the next generation of content creators, her impact is undeniable.
So, here’s to Malini, the genius behind MissMalini, your ultimate Bollywood BFF, who reminds us all to chase our dreams & embrace our unique journeys with open hearts.
