All About The Latest iOS
The newer versions of Apple’s operating system for iPhones and iPads are usually rolled out in phases. They are often released to the public at the company’s annual fall event. Before announcing the new software version, it undergoes extensive beta testing. For iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 in particular, eight beta versions were tested by releasing it to developers and public beta testers. This eighth beta version has been deemed final and shall be installed in the iPhone 15 models coming off the assembly line. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has learned from sources within Apple that the company plans to release both new software versions for the iPhone and iPad simultaneously.
The upcoming iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are expected to arrive shortly after the iPhone 15 launch announcement on September 12. Packed with features galore, the iOS 17 now boasts of a Standby mode, new AirDrop capabilities, interactive widgets, journal app, and other upgrades. The iPadOS 17 will come with a customised lock screen, Safari profiles, the Health app, and more.
Apple has made significant updates that will enhance the overall experience and ensure the devices run smoothly for its users. And we’re here to take you through the key iOS 17 features that will arrive on iPhones later this month:
Contact Posters
Isn’t it easier to recognise your contacts and remember their contact information when you have a visual depiction of them? And how fun is it to have your own personalised contact card version? Thanks to ‘contact posters,’ you can now customise what people see when you call.
NameDrop
Like AirDrop but for your contacts. NameDrop is a cool new feature that enables you to share your contact information with others by simply bringing together two iPhones. Hold your iPhone near someone else’s iPhone or Apple Watch to use NameDrop. You’ll both be able to choose the specific phone numbers or email addresses you want to share, along with your Contact Poster instantly.
StandBy
A new full-screen experience, StandBy is a new mode that turns the iPhone into a smart display while charging. Turn your iPhone on its side while it’s kept on a MagSafe or Qi-enabled charging stand to make it even more useful when you set it down. Users can add interactive widgets and get useful information at a glance.
Messages
The new iOS 17 introduces quite a few notable features under “Messages.”
The Check In feature: When you wish to let a family member or friend know that you’ve arrived at your location safely, you can make use of the Check In feature on your iPhone. When a user initiates a Check In, their close ones will be alerted as soon as they arrive. Likewise, you can also share your location or request a friend’s location through the plus button that can be viewed directly within your conversation.
All the iMessage apps collated in one place: To view all the things you send the most — like photos, audio messages, and your location, all you have to do is tap on the new plus button. Swipe up to view the rest of your iMessage apps.
Catch-up and swipe to reply: This feature brings up a catch-up arrow that takes you to the first message you haven’t seen in a conversation. You can then swipe right on any message to send a reply.
Search filters: Looking for a specific text or piece of information from a particular conversation just got easier. All you have to do is combine search filters to quickly narrow your search.
Read an audio message: Quite beneficial for short audio messages, this new feature transcribes the audio note(s), so you can read them with one quick glance and hear them later.
Stickers
Stickers have made their way into most conversations on various platforms, it’s a really fun way to express and communicate. You can use your own photos to create Live Stickers. The new stickers drawer lets you access all your Live Stickers, emoji, Memoji and other sticker packs in one place. They shall now sync with iCloud so your stickers will be available on all your iPhone, iPad and Mac devices. Use ‘Markup‘ to add stickers to photos, documents, screenshots and more.
FaceTime
How many times has it happened that you call a friend or family member on FaceTime and they don’t answer? Well, you can now record a video or audio message when someone misses your FaceTime call. Other than that, you can add a reaction through a mere hand gesture that fills the camera frame with fun 3D augmented reality effects like hearts, confetti, fireworks and more. With the iOS 17, you can use your iPhone as a camera and start a call directly from the FaceTime app on Apple TV, or hand off the call from your iPhone to your TV.
AirPods
With an entirely new listening mode for AirPods Pro (2nd generation), iOS 7 introduces an Adaptive Audio feature that dynamically blends Transparency and Active Noise Cancellation to tailor the noise control experience as you move between changing environments and interactions throughout the day. You can also quickly mute or unmute yourself on a call now.
Other updates
- Amongst the many features offered by this new OS, the Shared AirTags feature allows you to share the location of your AirTags with other people, making it easier to find lost items.
