Over the past few years, the Sweden-based music streaming platform, Spotify has been making significant strides in India’s rapidly expanding market. Ever since its inception, the company has been evolving, and presenting its users with a wide range of new features. Earlier this week, announced a new “Jam” feature that aims to bring all music lovers together.
The previous Spotify updates made sharing the music you love way easier like Collaborative Playlists and Blend, which received massive love from the app users. They’ve already created more than 45 million Blends. In the past month alone, the users have spent over 200 million hours listening to the Collaborative Playlists they’ve created with the ones closest to them. Following this success, Spotify introduced Jam where your group can now create and listen to playlists together in real-time.
For the shared love of music, you can now share your music. With Jam, you will find a deeper way to connect with your pals through the artists, songs, and albums that unite you and discover some unexpected gems too. Jam builds on some of Spotify’s popular social features and combines them with the music-streaming platform’s personalization technology to enable real-time listening for the whole group. Spotify Premium subscribers will be able to invite others to contribute through a shared queue and enjoy a musical experience curated exclusively for everyone who joins.
First things first, you need to make sure your app is upgraded to the latest version. The Jam feature was rolled out for all Spotify listeners globally on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. Though all Spotify users can be invited to join a Jam, only Premium subscribers can start one. All you need is your Spotify Premium account, and well, a group of friends… Then, you “invite” your squad and Jam will help you find the perfect songs to add to the queue. The way this works is that it will find the overlaps in your listening preferences to deliver music recommendations that everyone will love.
You will be able to see who has added which track so you know whom to thank for that crowd-pleaser, or who not to pass the aux to on the next road trip… Whether you’re prepping food together in the kitchen, enjoying games in the backyard, or dressing up before stepping out, this feature is the perfect way to get your squad together! Once you start a Jam, you can invite a group of friends or family who have a Free or Premium subscription, or a mix. Premium listeners can join from any location, whether they’re in the same room or across the world.
You can then invite your squad in any of these three ways:
Everyone in the Jam can add songs to the queue, see who added which song, and receive recommendations, all from their own devices. The host also has the ability to determine who’s in the Jam, change the order of the tracks, or remove a song that doesn’t fit the vibe. They can also enable “Guest controls” to allow everyone to rearrange or eliminate tracks but be prepared to turn it back off if the jammers turn chaotic with their music choices.
What better way to celebrate a new Spotify feature than with a house party? In honor of the launch, Spotify threw a house party in Beverly Hills on September 26, 2023, which was hosted by Reneé Rapp. Several celebs graced the event including social media stars Jake Shane (aka @octopusslover8 on TikTok) and Chris Olsen, Reneé’s co-star Auli’i Cravalho from Mean Girls: The Musical, and many more. The party also featured an intimate acoustic set by Rapp, who released her debut studio album, Snow Angel, in August.
Mikey Deleasa was DJing at the party as per his post on X (formerly Twitter). He invited people present at the house party to his “Jam.” They could add songs of their choice to the playlist and help him play.
Check out what the internet has to say about this new feature. This X user is happy that a Spotify listener with a free account can also join the “Jam.” It is also a sweet tactic by the brand to get the free users to convert to Premium.
Another user seems to be extremely excited to “Jam” with people. It’s evident that they love this new addition to Spotify.
Yahoo Finance‘s Josh Schafer, Dan Howley, and Pras Subramanian break down the new feature and share their thoughts on its functionality. They’re not too sure if they love “Jam” since they don’t trust their friends’ music taste.
Music sure is one of the best ways to bring people together. And how cool is it when your own people come together to jam to the whole gang’s favourite songs at the same time! The Spotify Jam feature is definitely going to be a party favourite. So the next time you get together with your friends or even when away from each other and wish to vibe together, try out this groovy feature.
