The global icon sure knows how to wow her desi audience, especially with her trendsetting style and friendly nature. In what happens to be a big moment for our fashion industry, Rihanna dazzled in designer Indian jewellery. The businesswoman has been on a spree to expand her “Fenty“-verse. She recently announced her venture into haircare with Fenty Hair. Rihanna threw a launch party for Fenty Hair on June 10 where she adorned TWO Indian fine jewellery brands!
Rihanna created history by styling a ruby choker which was designed by popular Indian designer Manish Malhotra‘s jewellery brand and a three-piece stone necklace by Sabyasachi High Jewellery. A combination no Indian celebrity has worn before! She paired the jewellery with a strappy cherry-red camisole, maxi skirt, and a matching oversized off-shoulder bomber jacket. The necklaces beautifully highlighted her sharp features, blonde hair and the Fenty makeup look.
Sharing Rihanna’s pictures from the event on Instagram, both the fashion houses described their exquisite pieces. “The global Icon Rihanna (@badgalriri), stuns in our Ruby Choker, crafted in 18k gold and custom-cut rubies encrusted in diamonds exuding Indian craftsmanship and artistry,” described Manish Malhotra Jewellery. She paired the choker with “a three drop rubellite, tourmaline and brilliant cut diamond necklace” from Sabyasachi High Jewellery for the Fenty Hair launch party in Los Angeles.
An Indian designer creation on an international celebrity is a noteworthy feat on its own, but here, two prominent Indian couturiers shared the spotlight. Reacting to the post, actress Bhumi Pednekar commented “🙌🙌🙌.” Influencer Diipa Büller-Khosla said, “Loooving this.” “Rihana × Manish Malhotra × sabyasachi 😍😍😍what a combo,” wrote one user.
Some users noticed that Manish Malhotra cropped out the Sabyasachi necklace in the images they posted on Instagram. This created a bit of a controversy with people calling Malhotra petty. Could this effortless pairing by Rihanna pave the way for future collaborations between designers? Let’s hope!
The international pop star recently visited Jamnagar, India to perform at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding celebration. Rihanna was dressed in a sheer, body-hugging green dress made by an Italian brand, under a hot pink sherwani. She paired her outfit with a whole lot of traditional Indian jewellery. And like most things she wears and does, the ensemble became iconic. Seems like the Indian craftsmanship rubbed off on her, making her opt for two of the biggest couture brands in the country.
This isn’t the first time international celebrities have sported pieces from these two ace designers. Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Campbell and Jennifer Aniston have previously worn Manish Malhotra designs. And the VIP client list is even longer when it comes to Sabyasachi, with names ranging from Oprah to Gigi Hadid.
Rihanna launched her cosmetic brand Fenty Beauty in September 2017. It later expanded into skincare and haircare products now. At the launch party, Rihanna talked about how curating Fenty Hair was a challenge for her. “Creating a haircare line is a lot more stressful than I thought. Considering all hair types, considering all of the brands that I’ve been in love with my entire life, I’m thinking, ‘If it’s not better than this one, it can’t work,‘” Rihanna said.
The global star added, “Evolving as a woman and even as an artist, hair has been such a huge part of that and a reflection of whatever I’m feeling. So, it changes a lot and my hair goes through a lot. Making this brand, I had to consider all of those things. I want to look fly, but I want my hair to be healthy. How do I do that? All of my products need to strengthen and repair while I’m out just being fabulous.”
By pairing Manish Malhotra with Sabyasachi, Rihanna delivered a masterclass in how to elevate Western wear with traditional Indian jewellery. Indian celebs and stylists, take notes!
