There are some spaces you walk into and instantly feel something shift. That is exactly what Saman’s new store in Colaba does. It does not announce itself loudly, yet it draws you in, gently, almost like a memory. With this Mumbai debut, Saman has brought more than just its collection from Lucknow. It has brought a feeling.

Saman Brings Lucknow’s Soul to Mumbai

The essence of Saman lies in maintaining the fragile elegance of the Chikankari work, a tradition embedded in the fabric of the art for centuries. It is impossible not to appreciate the level of consideration given to each detail once you step inside the shop. The clothes seem less like they are hung from the racks but rather like they are waiting to be found.

The fabrics move lightly, whether it is cotton, silk, or organza, and each piece carries the quiet labour of hands that have practiced this art for years. There is a certain softness to Chikankari that cannot be replicated, and Saman manages to hold onto that authenticity while still making it feel relevant today.

The Story Behind Saman and Its People

Saman’s backstory is equally nuanced, just like the intricate craftsmanship of its products. The founder of Saman, Rukhsar Khan, began her venture in Lucknow in 1999, which would have been a challenging endeavor since there were no online mediums available to make one’s mark at that time.

The company has since expanded into a community comprising almost 600 artisans, with a significant number of them being women from rural backgrounds. The unique aspect about Saman is that it has not deviated from its origin, rather it has made a platform where traditional practices can be maintained, albeit subtly.

At the launch, Rukhsar spoke about how Saman is not just a label for her, but something deeply personal. And that honesty reflects in everything the brand puts out.

Saman’s Colaba Store Feels Like More Than a Launch

During the opening of the store, there were many people coming in, either intrigued by what is happening or just there for the occasion. Influencers and celebrities such as Abu Azmi and actor Ayaz Khan came in to support the brand, but the main attraction was definitely the environment created inside.

People seemed genuinely interested in the items offered and engaged in meaningful conversations with those present. They touched the garments, asked about the process and appreciated the craftsmanship involved.

With the opening of a new store, Saman gives its guests in Mumbai the opportunity to stop for a while and appreciate the work done. The brand provides an opportunity to not only see clothing but also to learn about their production process and meaning.

I’ve been passionately chronicling the worlds of entertainment and lifestyle for more than 10 years, which means I've spent roughly 3,650 days shuffling between drama and crippling deadlines (and usually, the deadlines win). There’s truly not a day I can imagine doing anything else. I just really love having an excuse to call reading celebrity/creator happenings "research."
