According to the WhatsApp Blog, WhatsApp today introduced its new “Communities” update, adding new capabilities to your group chats in the app, after announcing its upcoming group chat update in April.
The new Communities approach, as you can see in this overview, enables users to link similar group discussions under a single banner, making it simpler to keep in touch with a larger context around a topic.
As explained by WhatsApp, “Communities like neighborhoods, parents at a school, and workplaces can now connect multiple groups together under one umbrella to organize group conversations on WhatsApp.”
Each WhatsApp community, as you can see in the image below, offers a summary of what the community is for and a list of sub-groups that users can select to join. This will make it possible to connect in entirely new ways through the app and open up new avenues for discovery, giving users more options to remain in touch.
Larger file sharing, emoji reactions, group audio calls, and other features are all part of the improved chat choices.
It’s a good upgrade that could offer more opportunities to connect with more individuals about shared interests by uniting a number of relevant chat groups under a single topical heading.
Of course, under the cover of encryption, it could also help criminal and antisocial organizations better organize and grow their networks.
However, it may have significant advantages in terms of optimizing opportunities and extending people’s networks from a local community or topic-based standpoint.
