It’s that time of the year when brilliant content finally gets its due. We are in the midst of the most prestigious awards season. After the 29th Critics Choice Awards held this weekend, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on January 15. Delayed from September 2023 due to the extensive writers and actors strikes, the Emmys are now landing in the thick of awards season, making it worth the wait.
After proving their mark at the 29th Critics Choice Awards, three shows dominated the 2023 Emmy Awards on Monday night as well – “Succession,” “The Bear” and “Beef.” Each show nearly swept its respective category in the drama, comedy and limited series races respectively. “Succession” and “The Bear” tied, leading with six wins each, and “Beef” followed closely with five trophies.
But here, there’s always room for something new — an Emmy win for music legend Elton John that makes him an official EGOT winner for Outstanding Variety Special for “Elton John: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.” This year’s Emmy nominations made room for a wide range of contenders thanks to the buzzy dramas that prompted week-by-week speculation.

Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the 75th Emmy Awards that aired on Fox provided multiple tributes to hit shows of the past, as well as the present. The casts of series like “Cheers,” “The Sopranos,” “Ally McBeal,” “Martin” and more reunited for the night, while former cast members of shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” took the stage to present awards.
The Emmys Structure
The Emmy Awards are prestigious awards that recognise excellence in the television industry. They are presented annually in various categories, including drama, comedy, limited series, variety shows, and documentaries. What the Oscars are to the film industry and Grammys to the music industry, the Emmys are for the television industry. In 2023, the Emmys entered its 75th year.
The Awards are divided into two main ceremonies: the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Daytime Emmy Awards. Winners of the Emmy Awards are selected by the members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). These organisations consist of industry professionals, including actors, writers, directors, and producers.
What The Nominations Looked Like
HBO led the way among all networks with a trio of hit shows. “Succession” ruled the nomination charts with 27 nominations to its name, “The Last of Us” followed it closely with 24 nods while “The White Lotus” garnered 23 nominations. Ted Lasso, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, The Bear, Beef, Dahmer, Wednesday, Barry and The Crown were among the other shows that received notable nominations at the Emmys. This goes to show the impact that the actual winners created over the year to emerge on top, and also the preferences and voting patterns of the Emmy members.
The 75th Emmys Winners
The crowd in attendance gave Niecy Nash-Betts a standing ovation during her acceptance speech for her work in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” “Beef” was crowned as Outstanding Limited Series.
